Heath Ledger.

Picking this week’s entry was a no-brainer for us, and I’m going to tell you why.

Heath Ledger was an actor who, until his death, remained grounded and down to earth, whose biggest passion was acting. Generally associated with his roles in films like 10 Things I Hate About You, A Knight’s Tale or Ned Kelly, it wasn’t until I saw some of the actor’s less advertised films that I started to appreciate his abilities. Films like The Brothers Grimm, directed by Terry Gilliam, or Lords of Dogtown by Catherine Hardwicke showed an actor who did a little more than just his job. It showed an actor who was disappearing into roles, a chameleon comparable to the likes of Gary Oldman or Johnny Depp. It also showed an actor who didn’t turn his back on his roots, proven when he made Candy in 2006. More recently he’s been critically acclaimed for his roles in I’m Not There and Brokeback Mountain, applauded for being an actor unafraid to take on controversial roles.

Christopher Nolan, who described Ledger as fearless, cast him as the Joker in The Dark Knight, and it is this role which has been unanimously applauded by critics the world over, with many supporting the notion that he deserves an Oscar nomination for his performance. This role serves as his final testament that he was an actor who committed himself to his art, and it is art.

When Ledger passed away on January 22, 2008, it was a shocking blow to the world, and the film industry in general. His loss is a huge shame and to this day people are still feeling the effects of his death. Heath Ledger once said “I never had money, and I was very happy without it. When I die, my money’s not gonna come with me. My movies will live on – for people to judge what I was as a person.” He may not be among us today, but his legacy remains, and those words ring true. Heath’s roles have defined the kind of person he is, a man who really was fearless and committed, and a man whose influence and impact will never die.

There’s no denying that The Dark Knight has been one of the most anticipated films of all time. The years leading up to its release have been fraught with controversy. For a while, a lot of fans were disappointed with how the film was shaping up. Batman with a motorcycle? A new futuristic suit? Pretty boy Heath Ledger playing the most popular comic book villain ever? Then the hype machine kicked into gear, with a very interactive viral marketing campaign, co-stars speaking very highly of Heath Ledger’s performance, and then, sadly, the actor’s very untimely death at the start of the year. Now the movie’s out, and the hype machine is in overdrive. Two days after its release, the film is already ranked number four on IMDB’s top 250 films of all time. Words like Oscar are being mentioned. And not one bad thing has been said of Ledger’s performance. Is it all hyperbole, or is The Dark Knight truly worthy of the accolades it’s already receiving?

David Mott

Who is David Mott? Well he’s Channel Ten’s chief programmer and has axed ‘Big Brother’ after a long and painful eight year stint on television.

David Mott! You are a legend. No more Kyle Sandilands, no more Jackie O and no more ruining what is a prime television spot. Bring back re-runs of ‘the Simpsons’ or Seinfeld.
